Cynical Humanism

"The world is like a ride at an amusement park, and when you choose to go on it, you think it's real, because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round and it has thrills and chills and it's very brightly colored and it's very loud. And it's fun, for a while.
Some people have been on the ride for a long time, and they begin to question: 'Is this real? Or is this just a ride?' And other people have remembered, and they come back to us and they say 'Hey! Don't worry, don't be afraid -- ever -- because... this is just a ride.'

And we kill those people."

"...And if there were a contest, and he had to compete in measuring the shadows with the prisoners who had never moved out of the den, while his sight was still weak, and before his eyes had become steady (and the time which would be needed to acquire this new habit of sight might be very considerable), would he not be ridiculous? Men would say of him that up he went and down he came without his eyes; and that it was better not even to think of ascending; and if any one tried to loose another and lead him up to the light, let them only catch the offender,

and they would put him to death."

Looking at what I just intended to be an excuse to put some Bill Hicks on our internets, I'm really enjoying the contrasts between both who gets killed and who does the killing in these parallel allegories

J/K haha! Like, there's no way scantron isn't up on his Platon son of Ariston.

Sheriff, it's time to devote your life to being the next bill hicks. I really think you could do it. Remember when robot had the idea to run you as a presidential candidate? you really can do anything if you put your mind to it.

If you recall, Scantron, I posted something last year about the high percentage of lawyers in our political system. Everything is going as planned, except I haven't figured out the whole Manchurian Candidate brainwashing thing.

Reuters reports that Lehman Brothers' (LEH 55.27, -0.84) Chief Global Bond Strategist sees the "deepest correction" ever in structured finance and the current market is in "recession-risk denial". The Chief Bond Strategist also expressed the opinion that the U.S. credit crisis is now worse than the one caused by Long-Term Capital Management.
